Protein S-100

Proteins S100 - a family of low molecular weight vertebrate cells, characterized by the presence of two helical-helical-helical motifs that show affinity for calcium ions. In these cells, they appear as antiparallel homologues and heterodimers, or less often as more complex oligomers. At least 21 proteins belonging to this family are described. The name is derived from the fact that the neutral pH of the S100 protein is 100% soluble in ammonium sulphate solution. Most of the S100 family of proteins are encoded by genes located within the epidermal differentiation complex (EDC) locus on the long arm of the first chromosome.
