Watchtower (building)
Roman watchtower used in limes
Watchtower - an element of a permanent fortification, in the form of a free-standing tower. It was an elevated observation post, allowing for observation by the guards of the vast area. It was usually equipped with a variety of signaling systems for early warning of the threat of a central defensive structure, such as the surrounding castle. The guards were also generally fortified and armed, allowing defenders to effectively defend themselves against infantry attacks, but because of their isolation, they did not provide any protection against a long siege siege war.
