Mieczyslaw Stelmasiak


Mieczysław Stelmasiak (born April 8, 1909 in Płouszowice, died June 20, 1982 in Lublin) is a Polish physician, anatomist, UMCS professor and rector and professor in Lublin. He headed the Department of Normal Human Anatomy at the UMCS Faculty, during his active work at the University (24 X 1944-31 December 1949) and the Medical Academy (1 I 1950-30 IX 1979), first as associate professor as an assistant (X 1948), prof. extraordinary (18 July 1949) and ordinary (6 April 1957).

He was one of the most active and well-known organizers of the Faculty of Medicine at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. From 1950 to 1953 he was rector of the Medical Academy in Lublin and then from 1959 to 1968 he was rector for three terms.

He was first known as a specialist in the nervous system. Atlas of anatomy of the brain and spinal cord and the Atlas of Human Anatomy (Vol. 1-3) prepared by the team under his direction.

He was also an editor and co-author of the highly praised work Anatomy. He has participated in numerous international congresses and anatomical conferences. He cooperated with many national scientific associations (Polish Anatomical Society - President of the Central Board 1959-1967, M. Copernicus Medical Society, Polish Medical Association and others) and foreigners (Czechoslovak Medical Association). In 1961, he assumed the chairmanship of the Municipal Committee of the Front for National Unity.

For his accomplishments he has received many awards, including the Officer's Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland, the Orders of the Labor Banner I and II, the Medal of the National Education Commission. In 1977 the authorities of the Medical Academy in Lublin gave him the honorific doctor honoris causa. He died in 1982 in Lublin. He was buried in a cemetery on Lipowa Street.
