Vitalian Donati


Vitaliano Donati (born 1717 in Padua, February 26, 1762 in the Indian Ocean) is an Italian archaeologist and botanist. He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1739.

He was interested in flora and fauna from the Adriatic and already in 1745 he published the Della storia naturale marina dell'Adriatico. This work has been translated into many European languages.

In 1750, Charles Emanuel III, King of Sardinia, offered him the botanical and natural history department at the University of Thuringia. During his professorial career, he also occupied the Department of Mineralogy and Geology. The Cathedral of the Orto Botanico dell'Università di Torino ran from 1750 until his death.

In 1759 he visited Egypt, visited Sinai, was interested in the Red Sea. He went to Syria, Palestine and then to Arabia. From there he sailed from India.
