Abu Sayyafa Group

Abu Sajjafa Group - an Islamic terrorist organization that emerged from the National Liberation Front of Moro in 1991. The group operates in the south of the Philippines, mainly on the island of Mindanao. Its leader was until 1998, when he was killed in the fight against the police, a veteran of the Afghan war - Abduragak Abubakar Janjawalani. At the death of Abduragaka, his brother, Gaddafi Janjawal, commanded the command.

The size of the organization was evaluated in 2003 for several hundred fighters. It is supported by about 1000 sympathizers.

The southern island of Mindanao was inhabited by Arabs for centuries before the arrival of Magellan. Spanish rule brought the Catholic Church, later taken over by the US, who took over the archipelago. The people of Mindanao who profess Islam, do so consistently despite the change of sovereignty over the island over the centuries.

The purpose of the Abu Sajjaf Group is to isolate the Philippines from the south and to create an Islamic state in Iran. According to the CIA, Abu Sajjaf has strong ties to Islamic fundamentalists all over the world, including al-Qaida. There is no evidence for this theory. This is unlikely due to backwardness and lack of communication with the outside world.

The organization deals with bombings, murders and kidnappings. The attacks are often government objects. So far (2003) the most bloody action of the group was the rally at the Christian city of Ipil on Mindanao. In April 1995, terrorists murdered 53 people.

The number of victims of the Abu Sajjaf Group (injured and killed) is estimated at several hundred.
