Jakub Bosgrave


Jakub Bosgrave (born 1553 ?, died 27 October 1623 in Kalisz) is an English Jesuit, mathematician, professor at Vilnius Academy.

He studied at Leuven in Brabant, then in Rome, where he joined the novitiate, which he held simultaneously with Stanisław Kostka and Stanisław Warszecki. Having completed his philosophical studies, he taught mathematics in Pułtusk and Vilnius. In 1576 he initiated mathematical and geometrical lectures at the Vilnius Academy, establishing a mathematics faculty at that school. In 1580 he returned to England and, recognized as a Jesuit, was sentenced to death. After the intervention of Stefan Batory at Queen Elizabeth, the punishment was changed to exile. Bosgrave returned to Poland where he took care of the sick. Bibliography Additional literature
