Eusebio Lillo Robles


Eusebio Lillo Robles Eusebio Lillo Robles (born August 14, 1826 - July 8, 1910) is a Chilean poet and politician, author of the words of the current Chilean national anthem. He was born in Santiago as the son of Agustín Lillo and Dolores Robles. He studied extensively at the Santiago National Institute, but had to stop learning because of family problems. At the age of eighteen he wrote his first poem, "To the Death of José Miguel Infante. He worked at the Ministry of Internal Affairs while being a correspondent of El Mercurio de Valparaiso. In 1847 he wrote - at the command of his superiors - a new national anthem. It was first published on 17 September 1847 in the journal El Araucano.

In March 1850 he was one of the founders and first president of the Equality Association. He also worked with the press against President Manuel Bulnes. In connection with the revolution of 1851, he had to leave Chile in exile - first to Peru and then to Bolivia.

He returned to Chile in 1875 and was elected mayor of Santiago. During the Pacific War he was the Minister of Plenipotentiary in Bolivia. In 1886, President José Manuel Balmaceda appointed him Minister of the Interior, but after a month he had to leave office due to a dispute with the president. In the years 1882 - 1888 he was also a senator and deputy chairman of the senate. In 1896 he was elected president of Alianza Liberal.
