Hibolites
Description Among the fossils found this kind of rostral dominance. Mostly they are rostral with distinctive mudguard (large extension just behind the apex and later narrowing in the front of the rostrum). They have double clear lateral lines and a very long alveolar channel in the rostrum. The abdominal cavity is quite short, ending at a distance from the apex. Cross section of rostrum close to round.
Meaning: Fossils of different species of Hibolites are auxiliary fossils in dating the middle and late juries.
Lifestyle: Sea necton
Occurrence: A genus known almost exclusively from Europe, where it occurs very often, sometimes in large numbers. Single descriptions also from North (Algeria) and South Africa and Antarctica. It is also present in Poland, in the expositions of the jury of the Cracow-Czestochowa Upland and in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains and in the Tatras.
