Johann Prokop von Schaffgotsche
Johann Prokop von Schaffgotsche (born May 25, 1748 in Prague, died 8 May 1813 in České Budějovice) - the first Czech Bishop of Schaffgotsche in 1785-1813.
He was the younger son of Count Ernest Wilhelm (died 1766) and Maria Maksymiliany von Götzen (died 1772).
He studied in Vienna, where on 17 February 1769 he received a doctorate in philosophy. Later he continued to study theology. He was ordained a priest in Vienna on May 25, 1771. In 1772 he became a kralo Hradecki canon. From 1779 he was general vicar of the diocese. A year later he moved to Moravia. He became a parish priest in Mohelnice and an Olomouc canon.
December 5, 1783 Emperor Joseph II issued a decree on the appointment of a bishopric in České Budějovice and appointed Johann Prokop von Schaffgotsche bishop. By another decree the Emperor entrusted him on April 18, 1784 with papal endeavors to establish a new diocese. Pope Pius VI appointed the bishopric in Ceske Budejovice on September 20, 1785.
Bishop Schaffgotsche joined him in organizing the diocese. He took over the property of secularized monasteries. In 1804 he opened a seminary. He assembled a library of 6,000 volumes.
