Macdonnell Mountains - a series of old, mainly precambrian gneisses, interrupted by granitoid intrusion, crushed in Herocene orogenesis and again in the alpine orogeny of parallel mountain ranges in the central part of the Australian continent. The highest peak of these mountains is Mount Zeil (1531 m n.p.m.). They were named in honor of Sir Richard MacDonnell during John McDouall Stuart's expedition in April 1860.
The mountains are parallel with the length of 644 km.
