Pietà Villeneuve-lès-Avignon

Villeneuve-lès-Avignon Pietà (Avignon Pietà) - a painting attributed to Enguerrand Quarton, a painter from Picardy and active in Provence between 1444 and 1466. The work was long anonymous, and the attribution to Quarton was made on the basis of similarities between Pietà and the picture of the Coronation of Mary.

The painting is from the collegiate church of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and was donated to Louvre in 1905 by the Society of Friends of the Louvre.

The image depicts, according to the pattern of the piety, Mary holding on the knees of the dead Jesus. On her right hand is St. John the Evangelist and on the left is Mary Magdalene. The unidentified form of the donor is shown in the left corner of the image.

Around the golden background is the inscription from the biblical Lamentations of Jeremiah, "All you dictate, see and see if it is painful like mine." Bibliography
