Antanas Purėnas


Antanas Purėnas (Lithuanian chemist, social and cultural activist, rector of the University of Witold Wielki (1940-46)) was born on February 16, 1881 in Tatkonys near Kupisz, Poland, November 5, 1962.

He studied at a grammar school in Liepaja. He continued his studies at the University of Dorpat, and in 1912 he received a master's degree from the University of St. Petersburg.

In 1910-18 he lectured at the St. Petersburg School of Commerce, engaged in the cultural life of the Lithuanian capital.

On his return he lectured on the so-called. higher academic courses. In 1922 he started teaching at the University of Lithuania in Kaunas, which led to 1950. In the years 1940-41 and 1944-46 he was rector of the university. In 1941 he became Vice-President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. From 1950 to 1962 he was a professor at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute, at the same time leading the department of organic chemistry and technology.
