Janusz Jarzembowski


Janusz "Jan" Jarzembowski (born November 29, 1933 in Poznań, died June 14, 1961 in Poznan) - Polish athlete, sprinter, Olympian.

He was one of the leading sprinters of the 1950s in Poland. First and foremost, he was a perfect runner in the 4 × 100 meter relay, where he was a six-time record holder of Poland between 1955 and 1958 (the best score was 40.0 seconds).

He twice competed in the Olympic Games. In Melbourne (1956) he reached the quarter-finals of the 100m race, dropped out in the 200m runner-up, and in the 4 × 100m relay he finished 6th in the finals (along with Marian Foik, Edward Szmidt and Zenon Baranowski). In Rome (1960) he only competed in the 4 × 100 m relay, which was disqualified for crossing the zone of change.

He was a three-time Polish champion at the stadium: at 200 m in 1960 and in the relay 4 × 100 m in 1954 and 1955 (CWKS Warszawa team). He played in 24 matches of the Polish national team, scoring 16 wins in a 4 × 100 m relay.

Life records:

He was a competitor of the Poznan (the transitional name of Warta Poznań) (1953), CWKS Warszawa (1954-1955) and Warta Poznań again (1956-1961). He died suddenly of viral meningitis.
