Karol Bojkowski

Karol Bojkowski (born 17 September 1923 in Nowy Sącz, died February 4, 1987 in Sosnowiec) is a geologist, specialist in geology of coal deposits, especially stratigraphy and carbonaceous paleontology.

Curriculum vitae

In Nowy Sącz he attended school. After the outbreak of war he took up paid work. In 1947 he obtained a certificate of maturity at the Secondary School in Jasło and began his studies at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Wroclaw. He graduated in 1951 with a master's degree in philosophy in geology and paleontology. In the same year he undertook work in the Upper Silesian Regional Station of the State Geological Institute. In 1963 he received his doctorate in natural sciences, in 1973 - habilitated doctor, and in 1985 he was appointed by the resolution of the Council of State Extraordinary Professor.

His professional and scientific work focused on the paleontological, stratigraphic and paleogeographical problems of carbon in Poland. He was the head of the Carbon Stratigraphy Laboratory and then head of the Department of Regional Geology and Basic Research at the Upper Silesian Geological Institute. He also served as an academic teacher of the Silesian University of Technology in the years 1969-1982.

He has participated in many International Congresses of Stratigraphy and Carbon Geology: The Netherlands (Heerlen, 1958), Great Britain (Sheffield, 1967), Germany (Krefeld, 1971), Soviet Union (Moscow, 1975) and Spain , 1983). He also participated in the International Geological Congress in Prague (1968). In 1983 he became a representative of Poland in the Standing Committee of the International Congress of Stratigraphy and Carbonology and a member of the International Union of Geological Sciences. He received many decorations, among others. Golden Cross of Merit, Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, medals of the 30th and 40th anniversary of the People's Republic of Poland, Gold Badge of Merit for the Katowice Region, Honorary Merit Badge for the Lublin Region, Badge of Merit for Polish Geology, Ludwika Zejszner and the First State Team Award for discovering and documenting hard coal deposits in the Lublin Region.
