Maria Gulegina (born 9 August 1959 in Odessa) is an opera singer of Armenian-Ukrainian origin, soprano. Biography

She was born in Odessa and studied there at the Music Conservatoire under the tutelage of Eugeniusz Ivanov, who has remained her personal teacher for many years. She debuted in 1985 at the opera in Minsk in the title role in the opera by Piotr Czajkowski Jolanta.

In 1987, she starred in La Scala as Amelia in a masked ball, which she performed in a duet with Luciano Pavarotti and then with Salvatore Licitra as Ryszard. Then she played the title character of Manon Lescaut and Tosca Giacomo Puccini. She played in Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, London and Paris, where she established her world-wide reputation after her performance as Abigail in Nabucco.

In 1990, she made her acting debut at the Metropolitan Opera in the role of Andrea Chénier, but in the USA she is best known as an opera artist in San Francisco and Chicago, where she created the Santuzzy creations in the Chivalry, Elvira in Ernanim and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. In 1992 she performed in St. Petersburg as Liza in the Peak Dam, and is very popular in Japan where she performed on the La Scala tour.
