Darjacze-je Bachtegan
Lake Bachtegan, photo taken October 10, 2000 by the crew of the Discovery shuttle, during the mission of STS-92. Bachtegan formerly Najruz (Persian: دریاچۀ بختگان trb. Daryācheh-ye Bakhtegān) is a saline lake in southwestern Iran, in the former Fars, in the eastern part of the Zagros Mountains, about 160 km east of Shiraz city. The lake's surface is about 350,000 hectares, making it the second largest lake in Iran (after Lake Urmia). Long about 100 km, wide to about 30 km. In the area of salt marsh, salt and gypsum cover.
It is fed by the Kor River, where the built river dams have significantly reduced the flow of water to the lake, consequently increasing the salinity and endangering the local population of flamingos and other migratory birds.
Ancient sources from this region of the world do not mention it, suggesting that it is a relatively recent creation. Once the town of Nejriz was located on its banks, but due to its drying and shrinking it is currently about 15 km east of the coast.
