Henryk Florkowski

He spent the first years of his life in Leszno. He attended school, grammar school and the State High School. Stanisław Leszczyński (until the outbreak of World War II). During the occupation he was sent for forced labor to Germany. In 1941 he attempted to escape, but was arrested and imprisoned in a penitentiary camp. After a severe illness he was released and in 1942 he returned to Poland. There he continued to study on secret sets and in 1943 passed the matriculation exam. After the war he began his studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Poznań. He earned his diploma in 1950. In 1967 he obtained his doctorate.

With Kościan he has been associated with the company since 1948. Initially as an assistant in the National Sanatorium for the Nervous Sick, later as a head of the district health center, then as a manager of a peripheral clinic. In the years 1954-1980 he worked in the district hospital as head of the internal department (in 1960-1965 he was the director of this hospital).

Henryk Florkowski devoted much of his life to social work. In the years 1954-1961 he was the secretary of the Board of the Polish Society of Medicine in Kościan. For many years he worked in the Polish Red Cross. He was involved in a number of social initiatives in the field of medicine and health education. He was the vice-chairman of the Social Committee of the Celebrations of the 600th anniversary of the Hospitaller Hospice and the vice-president of the Koszyński Society for the Development of the Health Service. He initiated and co-organized many sessions, symposiums, and scientific and popular science conferences.

His next passion was regional activity. He was a co-founder and long-time president of the Katyń Land Lover Association. He initiated the broad publicity and publishing activities of the Society. He wrote and published the Glossary of Dentists, was the editor of nine volumes of TMZK Memoirs. His accomplishments include over two hundred other articles and papers on the region. In addition, he delivered many lectures, reminding of the silhouettes of the forgotten, and merit-laden people. He was also involved in ecological activities, contributing to the creation of landscape parks: Przemęcki and im. General Dezydery Chłapowski.

Henryk Florkowski is the patron of the annual International Marathon Half Marathon.
