John Cope
Sir John Cope (born 1690, died 1760) was a general in the British Army. In 1745, during the Second Great Rebellion, he commanded the government at the Battle of Prestonpans, where he suffered a total defeat. After the battle he lost his command to Henry Hawley. He was also awarded the Knight of Bath Order of Bath. Curiosity
On the motives of the battle of Prestonpans was the song Heigh! Johnnie Cowp, are ye wauken yet? (Hey, John Copie, have you got up?). The title refers to Cope's error, which on the night before the battle completely ignored the Jacobite forces and instead went to sleep to sleep. Authoritative control (person):
