USS Leonidas (1849)
USS Leonidas was in service to the Pacific in 1849, commanded by Commander Swift of New Bedford. In 1850-1854, it was partly owned and controlled by Benjamin Smith Clark, Jr.
Purchased October 27, 1861 by the US Navy at New Bedford for $ 3050 for use in Stone Fleet. He was filled with stones and sailed from New Bedford under the command of John Howland on November 20, 1861. Exactly one month later he was deliberately sunk, along with 15 other units, in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the breakers from using the main channel leading to the port of Charleston four miles south-southeast of Fordu Sumter and three miles east-southeast of the lighthouse on Morris Island in South Carolina.
