At the end of World War II, the Japanese government introduced language reforms aimed at to limit the number of characters in common use and simplify their form. In subsequent years, further additions and changes were made. Subsequent enlargements led to the adoption of 1945 characters in 1981 and the replacement of the Tōyō list with a new catalog called Jōyō. After the last change in 2010, the list includes 2136 characters.
