Oceanic escort
USS "Ainsworth" missile (FF-1090) type Knox was classified as an ocean escort (DE-1090)
Ocean escort - a class of US Navy ships designed to perform ocean escort duties.
The ocean escorts evolved from the escort class destroyers built during World War II. They were mainly intended to escort convoys. Their construction was based on simple solutions, so that they could be quickly built in the case of armed forces, while at the time of the room they were characterized by a low cost of production.
The hull designation "DE" was taken over from the destroyer escort. They were designed to combat submarines, while their variants were designated as "DEG" (destroyer escort guided) to combat aviation. Therefore, the latter were equipped with anti-aircraft missile medium-range missiles RIM-24 Tartar.
In other countries, frigates were the equivalent of American ocean escorts. As part of the naval reform of the United States Navy in 1975, the current designation of ocean escorts (DE / DEG) has been changed to frigate / fast frigate guided (FF / FFG) to adapt naval class to international standards and enable comparisons of potential fleets of war.
