Taoudenni

Taoudeni (Tauden, also: Taoudeni, Taoudenit) is a rock salt mining center in northern Mali, in the Sahara. The history of this place dates back to the end of the sixteenth century, when these lands belonged to the Songhay state. Salt was initially mined in Taghaza, but after the seizure of the mines by the Moroccan Sultan Ahmad Al-Mansur, the Songhajes began mining in Taoudenni. Today blocks of rock salt are transported south to the shores of the Niger, where the waterway is spread over the central and southern markets. Bibliography
