USS Onyx (PYc-5)
USS Onyx (PYc-5) diesel-powered yacht. Built in 1924 by Pegasus Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp., Morris Heights, New York. Purchased by the US Navy on December 3, 1940, from Clifford C. Hemphill of New York. He was reworked and renamed "Onyx". Qualified as a coastal yacht on 13 December 1940 and included in service on 27 February 1941.
After the modifications he left New York and moved to Norfolk. He arrived there on March 22nd. Further arriving in New Orleans on 5 April, he entered service with the 8th Naval District Commander. He served as a coastal patrol unit in the Gulf of Mexico until January 1942. On January 22 he left Key West and went to New York where he arrived on January 31. "Onyx" was again ordered to report in the 8th Marine Division in New Orleans and went off on March 13th. He reached the target on March 27. He resumed service until February 1944. He was severely damaged in a collision. Damaged to a point where the repair was uneconomical was devoid of useful equipment and retired from service on 15 May 1944. He kept the name and classification number. It was destined for a target ship on 31 May of the same year and became available for this purpose on 31 October.
It was thought to be converted to a fuel bar in November, but the conversion never went beyond plan. "Onyx" was withdrawn from service on 1 February 1945 and was returned to WSA on 2 February. Its name was deleted from the fleet list on February 5, 1945. Bibliography
