Jonas Jučas


Jonas Jučas (born June 11, 1952 in Kaunas) is a Lithuanian politician, musician, musicologist, cultural activist, social and self-government activist, and Minister of Culture from the Government of Gediminas Kirkilas from 2006 to 2008. Curriculum vitae

Between 1970 and 1972 he studied at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. In 1976 he completed his studies in music theory and composition at the Academy of Music. Juozasa Gruodisa in Kaunas. In 1982 he graduated from the Lithuanian State Conservatory with a specialization in cultural education and choir conducting.

Since the late 1960s he has directed amateur artistic groups. In the 70s he worked as the head of the music section at the Kaunas State Puppet Theater and as an administrative manager at the Lithuanian State Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Kaunas Philharmonic. From 1977 he was employed as a teacher and then as an assistant at the Kaunas branch of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and as a member of the examination committee at the Cathedral of Jazz at the University of Klaipeda. He lectured at Lithuanian universities and abroad. Since 1991 he has been artistic director of the International Jazz Festival "Kaunas Jazz". He served as a jury at many international jazz competitions.

In 1996-1998 he headed the Department of Culture in the Kaunas Self-Government, and from 1998 to 2000 he was the chief specialist in the Kaunas Administration Culture Department. In 2000 and 2003 he was elected to the Kaunas City Council. Since 2005 he has worked as an adviser to the mayor of Kaunas.

He served as a Member of the Parliament from 2000-2004 on behalf of the Lithuanian Union of Liberals. in the Committee on Education, Science and Culture.

On July 12, 2006, he was appointed Minister of Culture in the Gediminas Kirkilas government on a recommendation from the Liberals and the Center. In the parliamentary elections of 2008 he was unsuccessful in applying for a parliamentary mandate from the party. On December 9 he ended his ministry. Bibliography
