Ship "Freya" - visible openwork tambors in the body of the superstructure in the midship

Tambor - a cover of the upper side (overhanging water surface) of the side vane wheels on side-by-side ships. The tambers were mainly intended to protect the paddles from damage when the ship was in contact with the ship's side or another object.

Tambours were sometimes elaborately decorated, especially on cruise ships, and the name of the ship was often painted on them (especially on American ships). In parts of river vessels the tamboros were built into the superstructure.
