Lopez, often referred to simply as "Cachao", received a thorough education in the field of classical music. He was a double bassist and composer. Initially, he played in a symphony orchestra in Havana. under the baton of Herbert von Karajan and Igor Strawinsky.

In the 1930s, he became known worldwide as one of the virtuosos of Latin jazz, and especially developed with his brother Mambo.

He won two Grammy Awards in 1995 and 2005 and a Grammy in 2003.

Cachao Lopez, who was born in Havana on September 14, 1918, left Cuba in 1962, three years after taking over the Communists. Initially settled in Spain and then in the USA. Miami has joined many prominent Latino musicians and singers such as Tito Puente and Gloria Estefan.

He played almost to the end of his life. In September 2007 he performed at the concert with trumpeter Generoso Jimenez. He also composed hundreds of songs, including many in the characteristic Cuban style. Authoritative control (person):
