Experimental Center in Lejre

Experimental Center in Lejre

The Lejre Experimental Center covers 43 hectares and is located near Roskilde in Denmark. It was founded in 1964 by Hans-Ole Hansen. The researchers reconstructed here an iron age village (500 BC - 400 BC), a Viking village (920 BC), a stone age camp (6000 BC) and a farm from 1863 with accompanying craft workshops, gardens and fields. Reconstructions are based on archaeological and historical documents. Scientists and students live and work in Lejre, recreating roles played by people who once lived in Lejre and similar places. Within the framework of the experiments, dwellings and stables were built, animals and crops were planted, clothing washes and cooked and eaten in the same way as prehistoric and historical people.

The annual center is visited by approximately 55,000 tourists and school children visiting for excursions.
