South American plate - a tectonic plate that covers South America and much of the South Atlantic.
From the east, through the Middle Atlantic ridge borders the African plate. In the north, they are contacted by a Caribbean plate and a North American plate, a Nazca plate on the west, and an Antarctic plate and Scotia plate from the south and west.
The age of the oceanic crust of the South American plate (South Atlantic) was defined as the period from the lower Cretaceous to the present. Cretaceous South America is moving away from Africa (westward) and from Antarctica (north). Bibliography
