Suriyothai


Suriyothai Queen - the legendary Queen of Siam (now Thailand), living in the 16th century, gave her life in defense of her king and husband Maha Chakkraphat.

Suriyothai was the queen of the early reign of King Maha Chakkraphat. In 1548, within half a year of taking over Maha Chakkraphat, Burmese troops invaded Siam and were preparing to occupy the capital of Ayutthaya. The king decided to use the capital to fight the elephants. In those days, women were not allowed to participate in the battle, but the queen was so afraid of her husband that she decided to break the habit and dressed in masculine attire took part in the battle.

During the battle King Maha Chakkraphat fell from his elephant and threatened him with death. Suriyothai led her elephant to protect her husband. Unfortunately, she paid her life.

The king set the stupa to honor her memory.
