Witwatersrand (Ridge of White Waters) is a mountain range in South Africa, approximately 100 km long and 37 km wide, with an average elevation of 1700 m. Important mining areas, mainly gold and uranium. Also in the Witwatersrand there are platinum deposits, silver, diamonds. Gold ore was discovered in 1886.

From this region, almost 40% of gold has been extracted so far in history around the world. Researchers at the University of Arizona have used age-restriction dating to 3 billion years - 0.25 billion years more than the age of the surrounding rocks.
