Forsyth-Edwards notation
Forsyth-Edwards Notation, abbreviated FEN, is a chess entry for determining the position of a chess game. The goal of FEN is to provide all the necessary information to re-start the game from the position.
FEN is based on a system invented by Scottish journalist David Forsyth. His system became popular in the nineteenth century; Steven J. Edwards developed the system to work with computers. FEN is part of the Portable Game Notation for Chess, because it defines positions different from the initial. Definition
