Hespèrion XXI

Hespèrion XXI - an international band performing early music. The name is derived from the Greek word hespera, which means - west; Hesperia is the ancient name for the Apennine and Iberian Peninsula.

The band was formed in Basel in 1974 on the initiative of Jordi Savall (string instruments, especially viola da gamba), Montserrat Figueras (soprano), Lorenzo Alpert (flute, percussion instruments) and Hopkinson Smith (punk instruments) as Hespèrion XX . Performs mainly works created before 1800.

With the advent of the 21st century, the band changed its name to the current Hespèrion XXI. Awards Bibliography
