Sierra de la Plata

The Sierra de la Plata (Silver Mountain) is a legend of silver treasures believed to have been in the interior of South America. This belief strengthened with the silverwork that Europeans had encountered in the native tribes. In the 16th century the Estuary of the rivers of Uruguay and Parana was named Río de la Plata, because it was believed that going up this estuary, will reach the Sierra de la Plata. The existence of such mountains, rich in silver deposits, has never been found. The closest to this legend is the silver mine in Potosí, Bolivia. The Latin term for argentum was named Argentina.
