Castanets
Traditional castanets. A girl dancing with castanets - painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1909.
Castanets (Spanish castañuelas) - a musical instrument from the group of idiophobic strangers, consisting of a wooden handle, to which one or both pairs of wood (rarely bones) seamed with twine are fixed on one or both sides.
When shaking the shells hit the wooden plate between them. Primary castanets, used by Spanish dancers, did not have handles - the players kept the shells between their fingers and shook them, hitting one another.
