Richard de Clare (4th Earl of Hertford)
Richard de Clare, 4th Earl Hertford (born 1162, died 28 November 1217) is an English magnate, son of Roger de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford, and Maud de Saint Hilary.
The title of Earl Hertford was inherited after his father's death in 1173. He was present at the coronation of the Kings of First and Second Lord of the Heart on September 3, 1189, and John without Earth on May 27, 1199. He was also present at the tribute of King William of Lincoln in Lincoln. During the battles of King John with the barons, Hertford stood on the side of the latter. He participated in the creation of the Great Charter of Freedom as one of 25 guards. On November 9, 1215 he became one of the representatives of barons negotiating peace with the king.
After another break between John and the barons of Hertford's good in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex was confiscated and given to Robert de Bethune. Richard was also excommunicated by Pope Innocent III. He died in 1217.
Approx. In 1172 he married Amici Fitz William, daughter of William Fitz Robert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester, and Hawise de Beaumont, daughter of Count 2 Leicester. Approx. In 1198, Richard and Amy were forced to part with their too close kinship. They had two sons and three daughters:
