Civilization of Swahili - a group of pre-colonial cultures of East Africa, formed around the 10th century. As a result of the mixing of Bantu cultures with the Cushites and the influx of Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf. At its height, the influences of the Swahili civilization range from the Horn of Africa (present-day Somalia) to northern Mozambique. The Swahilians were also the first African-American people to win a firearm. The main Swahili shopping centers were the cities of Lamu, Zanzibar, Malindi, Pate, Kilwa and the island of Mozambique, but never in this region to create larger state structures. In the nineteenth century, the Masai war broke out, and then came to the area to escape the recurring droughts as well as European colonization at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
