USS Namequa (YT-331)
USS Namequa (YT-331 / YTB-331) was built as "Port Elizabeth" (MC Hull 444). His keel was laid at the beginning of 1942 on order of the Maritime Commission. Caltex Shipyard and Dry Dock Co. He was launched on May 22, 1942, the godmother was Mrs. James F. Rogan. Renamed "Namequa" received the classification number YT-331 on September 29. It was purchased by the Navy on 15 October and entered service on 17 February 1943. Namequa was from the only daughter of the Black Hawk, the leader of the Sauk and Fox during the Black Hawk War (1831-1832).
The unit was assigned to the 1st Naval District and based in Boston, providing fire, towing and rescue services to naval units and installations. It served seven years of service. Reclassified on May 15, 1944, the YTB-331 continued normal service beyond March-October 1946 when it was in reserve.
