Erwin Chargaff
Erwin Chargaff (born August 11, 1905 in Chernivtsi, died June 20, 2002 in New York City) is an Austrian biochemist, DNA researcher.
He was born in Chernivtsi in Bukowina Principality. In the years 1923-1928 he studied chemistry in Vienna, then two years in Yale. From 1930 he worked at the University of Berlin, moved to the Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1933. In 1935 he emigrated to New York and became a professor at Columbia University.
He is the author of the laws on the content of nitrogen in DNA, later called Chargaff's rules. He also showed that the DNA base composition differs between species, that is, the ratio of (A + T) / (G + C) is different for different species.
