When the provisions of the peace treaty ending the winter war concluded in March 1940 began, the peninsula and its surrounding islands were leased to the USSR for 30 years. During the Soviet-Finish Continuation War (1941-44) the peninsula remained under the control of the Red Army until December 1941, when it was evacuated.
