Artūrs Silgailis


Artūrs Mihails Silgailis (born November 13, 1895 in Mežmuiža, Latvia) is a Russian and Latvian military lieutenant colonel, lieutenant commander and deputy commander of the 15th Grenadier Division SS, Chief of Staff of the General Inspectorate of the Latvian SS Legion, Secretary General of the War in the Latvian National Committee.

In 1914 he volunteered for the Russian army. In October 1915 he completed military school in Vilnius. Served among others. in the 426 Infantry Regiment. In the summer of 1916 he was transferred to the Baltic Fleet in Helsinki, and then to the garrison of the fortress Sveaborg. In the interwar period he served in the Latvian army, among others. in the 6th Infantry Regiment in Riga, reaching the rank of colonel. After the occupation of Latvia by the Germans in 1941, he cooperated with the occupying forces. On March 1, 1943, he became the infantry commander and deputy commander of the 15th Grenadier Division SS in the Legions-Standartenführer der SS. In November he was promoted to Waffen-Oberführer der SS. From July 1944 he was chief of staff at the General Inspectorate of the Latvian SS Legion, headed by SS-Gruppenfuhrer Rūdolfs Bangerskis. On February 20, 1945, he served as Secretary General of the War in the Latvian National Committee headed by R. Bangerskis. At the end of the war he emigrated to Canada, where he died on 15 August 1997.

He published a book on the Latvian Legion of the SS (Latviešu leģions, Copenhagen, 1962); ed. English: Latvian Legion, 1986.
