David Gray (journalist)
David Gray (born December 31, 1927 in Kingswinford, died September 6, 1983 in London), is an English journalist, tennis activist.
He studied at the University of Birmingham. After graduation he worked as a journalist and was associated with the editorial boards of "Wolverhampton Express and Star", "Northern Daily Telegraph", "News Chronicle", since 1958 with "Guardian". He dealt with political and cultural issues, the editorial staff of the Guardian focused on sports. For many years he was a tennis correspondent. He was involved in the development of tennis, was the opponent of maintaining the artificial division of amateur and professional tennis, sought to restore the status of Olympic sport (which occurred after his death), initiated the change of Davis Cup formula. Tennis development has also been seen through popularization throughout the world, including in the African continent.
In 1976, he resigned from journalism and became a member of the International Tennis Federation. Secretary General for Diplomatic Affairs. He was also the secretary of the International Men's Tennis Career Council. In 1988 a collection of his Shades of Gray was published.
He died of cancer and was posthumously listed in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985.
