Walfred
Walfred or Waltfred (born? - 896) was a Countess of Verona and then a margrave of Friuli in the last decades of the 9th century.
Walfred soon supported Berengar in his efforts to iron the Longobard crown after the dethroning of Karol Grube in 887. He was consiliarius and marchio of Charles and was the largest in Berengar in East Lombardy. He was even the successor of Berengar in Friuli, but the opinions of scholars were divided under what circumstances.
He could be succeeded by Berengar by about 890 when he was last heard of Friuli. Annales Fuldenses in 896 reported how Walfred died of power and how he wielded Veronica with "great devotion to the Emperor", Arnulf of Carinthia, and expressly stated that his death was an opportunity for Berengar to strengthen his claims to the kingdom after an earlier quarrel with Arnulf from this year. Some suggest that Walfred was detained at Berengar's place by Arnulf in 896 after Berengar escaped from Arnulf's camp earlier this year. In this case Walfred would rule Friuli less than a year.
