The escort bomber

escort bomber - developed during World War II the concept of an escort aircraft being a refurbished heavy bomber without bombs but equipped with additional defense equipment that was supposed to protect "normal" bombers.

At the end of 1942 and early 1943, American aviation did not have sufficiently long-range escorts capable of providing effective defense of bombers against German fighters and American bomb squadrons suffered very high losses. It was then decided to adapt already existing heavy bombers to the role of escort aircraft. These planes were equipped with additional armament and armor, but were not supposed to carry any bombs. The first tests, however, showed that the concept was unsuccessful, modified bombers were heavier and slower than their normal versions and the project did not go beyond the experimental phase.
