Aplastic anemia caused by chloramphenicol
Aplastic anemia caused by chloramphenicol - in about 1:19 000 cases, chloramphenicol induces an idiosyncratic reaction, which causes undesirable effects after administration of a therapeutic dose. There is a life-threatening aplastic anemia. It has been shown to be due to spot mutations in mitochondrial DNA. The modifications concern the MTRNR2 gene encoding the 16S rRNA subunit. The identified mutants causing susceptibility to chloramphenicol are T2991C and C2939A.
