Georg Weissel


Georg Weissel (born 1590 in Domnow, died 1 August 1635 in Konigsberg), German Lutheran priest and poet.

Studied at the King's College of theology and music, among others. by Johannes Eccard and Johann Stobäus. For several years he was rector of the school in Domnów, and from 1623 the pastor of the new church on Altroßgarten in Konigsberg. He belonged to a circle of poets gathered around Simon Dach and influenced by the master's work, as well as another well-known songwriter, Valentin Thilo (Younger). There are 23 church songs he authored. The beginning of the song "Raise up ..."

The most famous piece of Weissel is the Advent song Macht hoch die Tür, which is based on the words of Psalm 24 and widely circulated in Protestant chants around the world. It was published after the death of the author, in Preusisches Fest-Lieder, Elblag 1642, and the current melody was composed by Johann A. Freylinghausen (Geistreiches Gesang-Buch, Halle 1704). Johann Sebastian Bach used the song Nun liebe Seel, nun ist es Zeit in the 5th Canton of the Oratory at Christmas. In the current (2007) official chancery of the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD) there are 3 of his songs (Evangelisches Gesangbuch). Bibliography
