Martin Pohl


Martin Pohl (born 16th c. 1608) - Silesian sculptor of Mannerism, active in Legnica in the years 1581-1608, a student of the famous sculptor Caspar Berger from Legnica. Martin Pohl's work has been known since 1581. By 1595, he worked as a pupil at Caspar Berger's workshop, after the death of the master he married his widow and took over the workshop. Just like Berger, also Pohl created almost exclusively epitaphs and tombstones for the Silesian nobility. None of his works have been preserved in Legnica. He introduced the use of various materials, such as gabbro, alabaster, green and brown marble. He used German graphic designs. He specialized in fine alabaster reliefs.
