Prototekoza

Prototheca (Latin protothecosis) is a disease caused by chlorophyll-depleted algae belonging to the genus Prototheca.

Infections are caused by penetration into the skin and result in localized infections within the skin, subcutaneous tissue or deeper tissues (tendon sheaths, muscle tissue).

Diagnosis is possible after the inoculation or histopathological diagnosis of sporangioma with endosporia.

Treatment involves surgical removal of the lesion and intravenous administration of amphotericin B. Bibliography
