István Szötér


István Sötér (born June 1, 1913 in Segedyn, October 7, 1988 in Budapest) is a Hungarian writer, literary historian, promoter of Polish literature, Hungarian-Polish and Hungarian-French researcher.

He studied at the University of Budapest in Hungarian and French Philology. Since 1952 he was a professor of the university, and since 1963 - rector. Since 1957 he also served as the director of the Institute of Literature, and in 1965 became a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1960-1970 he worked as the president of the Hungarian Pen Club; then he became deputy minister of education, and in 1971-1973 - president of the Association Internationale de la Litteérature Comparée.
