Tomasz Bartkiewicz


Tomasz Karol Bartkiewcz (born September 4, 1865 in Miejska Górka, died March 25, 1931 in Gdynia) is a Polish composer and organist, co-founder of the Wielkopolska Singing Association.

He obtained his initial musical education at his family home, then studied with J. Figaszewski and Bolesław Dembiński in Poznań (conducting, organ playing). In 1884 he became an organist and conductor of the church choir in Koscielec near Inowrocław. In Pakość he founded a lay and church choir. In the years 1890-1897 he was the conductor of the "Lutnia" Singing Society founded in Kościan; He collaborated with local pastor Józef Surzyński, also a composer and conductor of choirs. In 1905 Bartkiewicz moved to Ostrów Wielkopolski, where he taught music at the grammar school and his own music school. He also performed there as an organist, conductor of choirs and orchestras.

He brought to Wielkopolska the amateur force of many valuable vocal and instrumental works. Noskowskiego (Chata za wsią), Münchheimer (Welcome to the Sun), Maszynski, Żeleński, Dembiński. He organized symphony and church concerts, delivered lectures, wrote musical articles. He organized many singing circles, in 1892 he co-founded the Songs Association of the Grand Duchy of Poznań and later became its artistic director (since 1908). He also organized contacts with the singing movement outside Wielkopolska, in 1914 he presided over the Singer Assembly with over 3,000 people.
