Cospaia

Cospaia - a historic microscopic republic in the Apennine Peninsula.

The state was founded in 1440 when, at the Council of Florence, Pope Eugene IV sold part of the territory of the Church of the State of Florence. Due to an error in the design of the borders, a small piece of land of about 500 m² was not incorporated into Florence, and its inhabitants declared independence.

At the peak of the Cospaia Republic, there were 330 inhabitants. Cospaia has become a refuge for smugglers (mainly tobacco). For this reason, June 26, 1826, it was liquidated and divided between the Church State and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

The former Cospaia is a district of San Giustino.
